about AMC

The Academic Medical Center Amsterdam (in short AMC) is one of the biggest institutions for health research in the Netherlands, as well as one of its largest hospitals. The center has brought its close collaboration with the VU Medical Center to the further level of an administrative merger (Amsterdam UMC), with a view to a full legal fusion to take place in the near future. However, until that time, formally, the two organisations remain legally separate, each with their own PICs. Over 7000 people work here to provide integrated patient care, fundamental and clinical scientific research, and teaching. The AMC complex houses the University Hospital and the Faculty of Medicine of University of Amsterdam as well as the Emma Children’s Hospital, the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience, the Medical Department of the Royal Tropical Institute, Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development. In addition, the Spinoza Centre for Neuroimaging building, Amsterdam Skills Centre and a number of biotech companies (some of which are AMC spin-offs) are also located on the premises. Some 1500 members of staff are either fully or partially employed in medical research. The AMC has selected eight research institutes in which fields it aspires to excel: Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences, Amsterdam Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Metabolism, Amsterdam institute for Infection and Immunity, Amsterdam Neuroscience, Cancer Center Amsterdam, Amsterdam Public Health, Amsterdam Reproduction and Development and Amsterdam Movement Sciences. The AMC encourages Open Science and fully endorses the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and consistently promotes, facilitates and ensures conduction of scientific research according to the principles of conduct for research integrity in and across the University Medical Centers in Amsterdam best pursued with a wide diversity of staff. The AMC takes part in the Amsterdam UMC Doctoral School where a total of 408 PhDs (67% female) for both locations were awarded in 2022, supervision training is offered and there is an active PhD student network.
