As the OSIRIS project advances toward its final stages, attention is increasingly turning to one important question: what lasting impact will the project leave behind?

In this latest edition of our Catch Up with OSIRIS series, project coordinator Inge Stegeman reflects on the achievements of Work Package 1 (Coordination and Project Management) and Work Package 5 (Training and guidance to increase reproducibility), highlighting how OSIRIS is laying the groundwork for more transparent, reproducible, and usable research.

Creating the OSIRIS Consortium

Every successful project begins with a strong foundation.

For Inge Stegeman, one of the achievements she is most proud of is the establishment of the OSIRIS consortium itself. Bringing together a diverse group of partners across Europe, the consortium was built around a shared commitment to improving research reproducibility through Open Science principles.

From developing the original project concept to shaping the Open Science strategy that guides the consortium’s work, Work Package 1 has provided the framework that enables all other project activities to succeed.

We developed all the ideas and the Open Science plan on how we were going to do that. That’s what I’m very proud of in Work Package 1.” – Inge Stegeman

Turning Evidence into Practical Guidance

While coordination forms the backbone of the project, Work Package 5 focuses on ensuring that OSIRIS findings are translated into practical resources for the wider research community.

The work package is currently developing a comprehensive guidance and training package that will bring together lessons learned across all OSIRIS work packages.

The aim is to create accessible, easy-to-use resources tailored to different stakeholder groups, including:

  • Researchers
  • Research funders
  • Academic journals
  • Publishers
  • Research support professionals

These resources will help stakeholders implement practices that support transparency, reproducibility, and higher-quality research.

Supporting Different Stakeholders

One of the key priorities for Work Package 5 is ensuring that guidance is relevant to the specific needs of each audience.

The challenges faced by researchers differ from those encountered by publishers, journals, or funding organisations. By tailoring guidance and training materials accordingly, OSIRIS aims to maximise the practical value and uptake of its recommendations.

The ultimate goal is not only to improve reproducibility but also to make research outputs more useful for decision-making, policy development, and real-world practice.

Preparing for the Next Phase

As the project progresses, Work Package 1 continues to oversee key milestones, including reporting and evaluation activities with the European Commission.

These reviews provide an opportunity to assess achievements, gather feedback, and ensure that the project remains aligned with its objectives and expected impact.

At the same time, Work Package 5 is entering a critical stage as guidance materials and training resources begin to take shape.

A Legacy Beyond the Project

Although OSIRIS will formally conclude in 2026, the guidance and training resources being developed today are intended to support the research community well beyond the project’s lifetime.

By translating research findings into practical tools and recommendations, OSIRIS is helping build a stronger foundation for transparent, reproducible science across Europe and beyond.

We can really help the people who are actually doing the research jobs to make their research more transparent, more reproducible, and more usable for practice.” – Inge Stegeman

Explore OSIRIS Resources

The OSIRIS website already hosts a growing collection of project outputs, resources, and tools designed to support researchers and other stakeholders interested in improving reproducibility.

We invite you to explore the available materials and follow the project as it moves toward its final symposium and the publication of its key outcomes.

About the Catch Up with the OSIRIS Work Package Leads Series

Recorded during the OSIRIS General Assembly in London, this interview series highlights the achievements, challenges, and future plans of the work packages driving the project. As OSIRIS moves toward its final symposium, The Legacy of OSIRIS: Open Science for Reproducible Research, taking place on 5–6 October 2026 in Prague, Czech Republic, the series offers an opportunity to reflect on the project’s progress and emerging impact.
